Flossing is perhaps the least enjoyable part of cleaning our teeth. Nobody likes doing it, but everyone gets told that they have to. Many people don’t take this advice terribly seriously and feel that brushing their teeth is all they need. The truth is, though, there’s a very good reason your dentist tells you to floss.

Flossing Reaches Where Your Brush Doesn’t

This is a pretty big thing in itself. The bristles on your brush just aren’t that good at getting between your teeth. People with gaps between their teeth are a little better off, but a brush still isn’t as good as floss.

Clearing out those areas between your teeth is really important. If left unchecked, the plaque and tartar that builds up can cause serious problems. Cleaning your teeth with your brush only helps, but leaves an equally big problem to grow!

So we know that flossing is good because it cleans where your brush can’t. But if you floss before you brush, you can actually make your brushing even more effective.

This is because there’s less plaque covering your teeth, allowing the fluoride to reach more surface area than before. In turn, this makes the toothpaste work better to clean and protect your mouth.

Leave out the flossing and you’re opening yourself up to some time consuming, costly, and often uncomfortable procedures in the future.

So while it might seem like additional work to have to floss your teeth if you haven’t been already, flossing is an important part of your oral hygiene. A few minutes of flossing between your teeth can save you weeks of lengthy, costly dental visits in the future.
